get the {COLOR} BUG

PASTEL DIP-DYED HAIR IS HOT RIGHT NOW, BUT NOT EVERYONE WANTS THE LOOK TO BE PERMANENT...
that's where Kevin.Murphy's color.bug {now available at Mana} steps in!

Just rub the color-bug compact against the strands of hair you want to turn Technicolor, and it will instantly coat them in its vibrant powder. When you're done, simply wash the color out with water. Streak multiple colors through your mane for a My Little Pony effect, or cover your strands from root to tip to mimic the powdered 'dos from some of the spring '12 shows.

You can also keep it (relatively) simple and just dip your tips to create a punky-pastel effect. There are only three colors available as of right now — pink, purple, and coral — but we're hoping Kevin will introduce more soon.

One word of warning: The powder doesn't have great staying power (hence temporary), so it will rub off on everything. Refrain from touching your hair and definitely don't wear it with your whites, unless you want them to turn into a pastel mess by the end of the night.

celebrity SHORT CUTS

THINKING OF HAIR YOUR HAIR CUT SHORT FOR SUMMER?
Here's some celeb 'short hair' inspiration...
Cate Blanchett's style is a classic shape, but what makes it feel new are the rounded layers that impart a soft, swingy quality.  This cut softens the jawline but accentuates a round face, and it works whether hair is straight or curly—just not too thick.

Evan Rachel Wood's cut is short above her ears, with choppy layers that go from her bangs to her nape. Cut squarely at the sides and back, the layers on top are razored, which softens this look when tousled with wax. This works if hair is fine to medium and wavy or straight, but looks rounded if it's curly.

Halle Berry's cut is a modernized version of a pixie - it's squarer on the sides and longer on top. It's also cut at random so the layers all vary in length which softens her cheekbones and brings out her eyes.
It's perfect for wavy, curly, or coarse hair—any thinner can look too spiky.

Ashlee Simpson's cut is layered pixie cut to the shape of the head, leaving length at the forehead, nape of the neck, and sides. She has a heart-shaped face, so keeping the hair a little  longer and adding side-swept bangs balances her jawline.

conditioner RULES

A COMMON BEAUTY MISTAKE IS APPLYING CONDITIONER ALL OVER YOUR HAIR...
Most people apply conditioner as they do shampoo: starting at the top of the head and working it all through the hair - which is a common mistake.
Apart from wasting product, conditioning the roots can weigh your hair down and make it look greasy. {The hair closest to the roots is healthy new growth; it's the ends that are older, more likely to be damaged and that are in need of conditioning.}

A better way to do it: Start at your ears and apply conditioner all the way to the ends. You will gain volume and won't have to wash your hair as often.

signs you NEED A HAIRCUT

IF YOU'RE TOSSING UP WHETHER TO GET YOUR HAIR CUT OR NOT...
here are some signs that may help you make your decision to pick up the phone and make a booking:

* Your hairstylist cut layers the last time you got your hair cut, and now your hair is nearing one length.

* You've had the exact same length for the past five years. To ensure your dead ends are gone, get a few centimetres chopped.

* Your hair is looking thinner. The longer fine hair grows, the thinner it looks. A shorter cut can give you the appearance of thicker, healthier hair.

* It takes you longer than usual to style your hair. When it never turns out the way you hoped, your cut is getting too long.

top CONDITION

CONDITIONING TIPS FOR ALL HAIR TYPES...
For fine or limp hair: Nourish hair with a weekly hot-oil treatment. It's lighter than a mask and won't weigh down fine hair. Pick one with proteins, which fatten strands.

If you have curly or coarse hair: Once a week, apply a deep conditioner that contains keratin to just-shampooed hair. Leave it on for ten minutes. The conditioners seal the cuticle to keep out moisture (which helps prevent frizz), while the keratin strengthens hair to resist damage.

catwalk HAIR

PERFECT ON THE CATWALK & PERFECT FOR THE WEEKEND...
The new way of wearing the trend was seen at Emilio Pucci, where tousled, side-parted hair was gathered into super-low ponies a few inches from the ends. The look was also seen at Clements Ribeiro, and at Viktor & Rolf, where it was tied with a neat little ribbon or a gorgeous silk scarf.

hair love: STELLA MCCARTNEY S/S '12

LOVING THE HAIR @ STELLA MCCARTNEY S/S 2012, IT'S PERFECT FOR SUMMER!
Here's the insider info...
Hairstylist Eugene Souleiman looked no further than McCartney herself to get inspiration for the high and tight chignons. "What can I say? It's just Stella," he said of the bun that he swept up at the crown, coiled, and pinned to hold. Breaking out a blush brush to go over a layer of hair spray he had spritzed onto the sides to create sleekness without any harsh lines, Souleiman used his fingertips to rake hair back from the hairline, manipulating slight grooves along the surface.
Simple as it all seemed, there was definitely a point of view to the style. "Get rid of that Alberta Ferretti stuff—it's way too romantic," Souleiman advised a member of his team to emphasize the "very chic, but slightly tougher and more masculine" message.
