3 top styling tips for YOUR TOPKNOT

WANT TO PERFECT YOUR TOPKNOT OR BALLERINA BUN?
Try these  3 easy top tips...

Tip 1: Backcomb your ponytail to create a bigger, more secure bun. If your hair is slippery straight or on the fine side, this is especially helpful. A little bit of teasing not only creates the illusion of more hair, it gives it enough grip to stay up all day or night.

Tip 2: Jackknife the bobby pins into your hair to keep it in place. If you're using bobby pins to create the bun, here's how to make it super secure: Push the feet of the bobby pin up through the edge of the bun and then jackknife the bobby pin back down, towards the centre of the bun.

Tip 3: Wrap or tuck the bun tightly and then loosen it a bit with your fingers. Most of us want a little bit of fuzz or messiness in an updo, but if you start messy, your topknot {or whatever type of bun you're creating} will get really messy by the end of the night. Start with a tighter, more secure bun and then loosen strands lightly with your fingers to make it look less perfect.

cut inspiration: THE CURVED FRINGE

HAVING A SLIGHTLY CURVED/CURLED FRINGE...
is a softer and easier way to wear your hair rather than the dead straight blunt fringe.
INSIDER TRICK: Use a flat iron and give a little bend by curving the iron right at the bottom.

short cut inspiration: CHARLIZE THERON

LOOKING FOR IDEAS ON HOW TO STYLE YOUR SHORT CUT?
Take a tip from Charlize Theron: Just sweeping back the fringe transforms pixie cut into an elegant style that's equal parts stong and sexy. To get a similarly texturized effect, run a touch of pomade through hair.

how to TOUSLE

ANYONE CAN CURL HAIR, IT'S CREATING A MUSSED-UP, NO-FUSS, TOUSLED LOOK
THAT THE TRICK...
Kevin Murphy, star stylist and creator of Kevin.Murphy hair products {we stock them at Mana}
explains how all hair types can ‘tousle’…

NATURALLY WAVY HAIR Wash hair and sleep on it to create gentle waves and settle frizz. If you need extra lift the next morning, dab a volumiser onto the root area or a product designed to enhance wavy hair to the mid-lengths. Then take random chunks of hair near the face and wrap it around a curling iron to create different waves. Wind the hair away from your hairline so it falls on the face with height.

FINE, STRAIGHT HAIR Apply a volumising mousse and blow-dry hair upside down to give volume, then toss hair back and apply an oil-free forming cream. Using small-sized hot rollers, wind hair around and under the roller. Remove rollers when they have completely cooled down. Don’t touch your hair until it’s cool, even if the curls seem poodle-like, they will relax. This process helps the style last, if you touch it too early it will become limp. To maintain curls, mist with a little aerosol spray.

COURSE, STRAIGHT HAIR The best way to achieve waves for this hair type is to start with a layered cut, especially around the face. Apply a gel or mousse to wet hair and wind hair down and under regular size Velcro rollers. Allow hair to dry naturally for 15 minutes then blow-dry for five minutes. Leave to cool, then take out rollers to release bouncy curls. Use a hot iron curler to enhance tendrils around the face.

CURLY HAIR After washing, apply a straightening balm and blow-dry. Brush completely dry hair for five minutes to smooth and pin it back into a bun. Use bobby pins, as an elastic band will leave an indentation. This stretches the curl out and eliminates frizz. Leave hair as long as you can, the longer, the better. Finish by wrapping random sections around a curling iron to create a few well-defined waves.

french chic BEAUTY

FRENCH WOMEN ALWAYS LOOK EFFORTLESSLY ELEGANT, don't you agree?
But how do they do it, what's their secret?
Here's how you can add a French touch to your daily beauty routine...

Rule #1: Only play up one facial feature. If you're going to wear a dark liquid liner, go easy on the blush and lips. Ditto for a bright red lip. French women never overdo it and really value simplicity.

Rule #2: Lay off the shimmer and lip gloss. Most Parisians stick to matte, natural lip shades and foundations with a satin-finish {and very little bronzer}.

Rule #3: Get unplugged. Most women wore the au naturel texture of their hair proudly, and I never saw a style that looked flat-ironed, round-brushed or curled into submission.

Rule #4: Never underestimate the power of an elegant, low-key chignon. A low bun with a little bit of volume on top looks effortless, sophisticated and classic.

Rule #5: Define eyes with liner, not shadow. Instead of pulling out vibrant eyeshadow shades, which can give you an unrealistic result, try a charcoal, black or espresso winged liner to accent your gaze.
